YAM Notes: January/February 2012

By Gregory A. Weiss

Our class was well represented at the AYA assembly in New Haven in November. Steve Shelov was there in his capacity as our AYA representative. Tom Opladen spoke well about his efforts to establish a new affinity group among Yale grads who have served in the military. And present to accept two awards on behalf of the class were reunion cochairmen Cary Koplin and yours truly, Greg Weiss. The class won AYA Board of Governors awards for excellence for highest total attendance ever at a 45th reunion and for highest-ever percentage of classmates in attendance at a 45th reunion. Kudos to everyone; let’s make sure we do the same for the 50th in 2016!

Al Jubitz and his wife, Nancy, were recently honored with the United Way of the Columbia-Willamette’s Major Gifts Award for their philanthropic work in the Portland, Oregon, community. They were also awarded the Tocqueville Society Award from United Way Worldwide. The Tocqueville award is in recognition of the Jubitzes’ philanthropy, volunteerism, and support of causes locally, nationally, and globally. Past awardees include the Gates Family, Bob Hope, Henry Ford II, and President Jimmy Carter. Al is the retired copresident of Jubitz, Inc., a Portland-based transportation company.

Dean Gaver, a partner in the real estate department at Greenbaum, Rowe, Smith & Davis LLP, has been selected Woodbridge, New Jersey’s, Best Lawyers Land Use & Zoning Lawyer of the Year for 2012. And a proudGene Dattel reports that his wife, Licia Hahn (Bryn Mawr, 1977), is becoming a “full-fledged Yalie.” She was one of two keynote speakers for the Yale Women’s Leadership Initiative that was held at the Yale Law School in November.
